The Most Expensive Rust Skins (Read 9 Sep 2026): What They Sold For in the Store, and What They List For Now

The most expensive Rust skin with a live Steam price on 9 September 2026 is the Big Grin metal facemask, at a $1,325.92 lowest listing with eight sellers; the most expensive outright is the Punishment Mask, which had no Steam listings at all on the read date but three on Skinport at $2,952.12, an all-time-high Steam median of $2,026.55 on 31 August 2025, and 86 known copies in existence. Below them sit a bandana from 2015, a garage door from 2024 that cost $3.49 in the store, and the Glory AK47.

Every figure on this sheet is a Steam Community Market lowest sell order observed on 9 September 2026 through the SCMM tracker, printed as a band, with the item's original store price, acceptance date, supply count and all-time high beside it. Why these and not the ones on other lists

Most "most expensive Rust skins" articles are undated and copy each other, which is how the Tempered AK47 keeps appearing at "$200–$500+" years after it fell. On the read date the Tempered AK47's lowest listing was $11.65 with 80 sellers — below its original $19.99 store price. This sheet ranks by what Steam actually showed on one day and prints the day. The supply counts come from the tracker's inventory census on the same date; they are estimates of copies in circulation, and they are the reason the ranking looks the way it does.

1. Punishment Mask — the one you cannot buy

The Punishment Mask is a metal facemask accepted on 1 December 2016 that was never a store item, and the tracker counts 86 copies in existence. On the read date it had no listings on the Steam Community Market; the only live asks the tracker found were three on Skinport at $2,952.12 and single listings near $2,995 on two smaller markets. Its last recorded all-time high on Steam was a $2,026.55 median on 31 August 2025. Price guides quoting "$1,500–$2,000" are quoting that history; the current ask is nearly $3,000 and there are three of them. Anything offered as a Punishment Mask on a trade bot deserves a hard look at the item name.

2. Big Grin — $1,250–1,400

Big Grin is a $9.99 store facemask from November 2016 that became the most expensive Rust item with a live price. Eight sellers on the read date, lowest $1,325.92, and an all-time high of $1,545.27 set only four weeks earlier on 13 August 2026 — this one is still climbing, which the 1,199-copy supply and the facemask's visibility in every fight explain between them. At this price Valve's 15% is nearly $200; the cash marketplaces on the buy-and-sell sheet undercut Steam's fee-inclusive listings on items like this, and a 0% buyer fee matters.

3. Creepy Clown Bandana — $900–1,050

Accepted on 29 October 2015, never sold in the store, 194 copies counted. Three sellers on the read date at a $977.12 low, against an all-time high of $1,310.56 on 6 February 2026. It is the oldest item on this sheet and the thinnest market: with three asks, one sale moves the price a hundred dollars.

4. Neon Dragon Garage Door — $450–520

The strangest entry and the most instructive. A $3.49 store item accepted on 8 February 2024, with 406 copies counted, listing at $489.03 with four sellers on the read date and an all-time high of $583.61 on 15 April 2025. A garage door — the most-visible building skin in the game — sold for one week to a few hundred buyers and never returned. 5. Glory AK47 — $330–350

Sold for $1.99 on 20 April 2017, 1,258 copies, $345.88 lowest with seven sellers on the read date, all-time high $522.65 on 22 January 2021. The Glory AK47 is the reference case in the item store explainer because its whole history is on the record: a $1.12 low six months after release, then the climb. The best AK skins sheet has its cheaper company.

6–10: the second tier

• Hot-tempered Longsword — $19.99 store price on 18 November 2016, 181 copies, $226.59 low on the read date, all-time high $382.70 on 25 July 2025. A melee skin at rifle prices because there are almost none of it.
• Tempered Mask — $14.99 store price, 28 November 2016, 943 copies, $210.89 low with 13 sellers; all-time high $345.60 on 31 July 2021. The facemask from the same Tempered line whose AK47 fell to $11.65.
• Alien Red — a $2.49 AK47 skin from 9 February 2017 with 3,477 copies, $175.46 low with eight sellers, all-time high $210.01 on 21 April 2021. Guides that call it a hoodie have not opened the listing.
• Incarceration Armored Door — never a store item, 25 November 2016, 384 copies, $127.28 low with ten sellers; all-time high $162.24 on 22 August 2022.
• After Death AR — the cautionary tale. A $2.99 store item accepted on 24 July 2025 that hit an all-time-high median of $345.03 nine days later on 2 August 2025, and listed at $92.41 with 22 sellers on the read date. Store-week hype is not scarcity.

The pattern in the numbers

Three things separate the top of this list from the 6,000-odd Rust skins that trade for a dollar. Supply: every item above has between 86 and 3,477 counted copies, against 20,000–80,000 for a typical modern store item (the Whiteout Hoodie's supply on the read date was 82,460). Age: eight of ten were accepted in 2015–2017, when the store sold far fewer copies per week. Visibility: seven of ten are facemasks, bandanas, doors or AKs — the items other players actually see. Facepunch's stated policy of pulling skins that have "made too much money" locks the supply; the game's PvP decides which of the locked ones matter.

What the bands leave out

Steam's lowest listing includes the 15% Valve keeps, so a seller of Big Grin at $1,325.92 receives about $1,127 in wallet funds. On cash marketplaces the same items list lower and pay in money. The tracker's cross-market read on 9 September 2026, same day as the Steam figures:

A 25–35% gap between Steam's fee-inclusive ask and a cash marketplace's ask, on the same item on the same day, is the buy-and-sell sheet's entire argument. And none of these prices is a promise; the After Death AR lost 73% from its peak in thirteen months, and the Tempered AK47 lost 91% from its release-day median over a decade.
